As the name, Alpes, suggests the region is close to the Alps, but also Massif Central, making the region notably mountainous. The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes also contain part of Mont Blanc. The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes haven’t been around for long, just since 2016, but in late 2017 it was given it’s own coat of arms, which was a step for it[1].
The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes where merged from two older regions, including the Rhône-Alpes. The Rhône-Alpes where once apart of Rome and latter became a royal territory earlier in French history, making a lot of connections from older (potentially now lost) history[2].
In 1924, 1968, and 1992 the Winter Olympics where held in the Rhône-Alpes.
